IRIS Develops NIEMView™
Alexandria, VA, February 14, 2018– IRIS is excited to announce the launch of NIEMView™, a free online service providing a “birds eye” view into the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM). Intuitive Mind Maps allow the NIEMView™ user to explore, in a simple and direct way, the various domains and classes contained in NIEM for use by it’s Community.
The NIEM is used by the US military, federal agencies, state governments, and internationally to communicate information safely and efficiently serving as a common vocabulary enabling efficient information exchange across diverse public and private organizations. The model has over 14 domains including Agriculture, Emergency Management, MilOps, Human Services, Health, etc. and provide consistent, reusable data terms and definitions, and repeatable processes which saves NIEM participants time and money.
It is through IRIS’ support of the NIEM Health domain for Federal Health Architecture (FHA), of which they are stewards for, that the team recognized the opportunity to provide services different from what is already accessible to the NIEM Community.
IRIS’ President, David Clark remarked that “We quickly noticed that the current NIEM tools lack the ability to depict inheritances of the various domain elements to the NIEM Core and offer substitute elements for cross domain exchanges, our service provides both.”
Another feature offered within the mindmaps is the ability to click on hyperlinks to be immediately redirected to the precise location within the NIEM standard. Lastly, for those in the community who prefer to work in UML, IRIS’ tool provides a UML rendition of the entire NIEM 4.0 CORE and Domains.
This is the third online tool that IRIS has developed, designed to support semantic interoperability, this year. In February IRIS released FHIMView™ which provides the health IT community with a compelling, visually understandable, and downloadable presentation of the Federal Health Information Model (FHIM). FHIMView can be used to compareany information model to the FHIM. Inlate September FHIRView® was launched which delivers a simple, direct rendering of FHIR®’sresources, elements, and datatypes. FHIRView® was developed in response to the need for an intuitive, fast, and accurate method to access health IT standards and compare data models.
“Last year the team began to jokingly refer to ourselves as “Interoperabilitists©”, this year we proved that we are. I am very proud of this work and look forward to the enhancements we make to each of our products in the year ahead!” -David Clark.
IRIS is a health information technology (HIT) management and technology services firm founded in 2006 which leverages decades of HIT program management, architecture, engineering and software development experience. IRIS core values are predicated on People, Processes, Performance, and Pricing - which drive our delivery model to achieve higher outputs and lower costs for our clients, while improving the functionality and efficacy of healthcare processes through the delivery of superior design, development, and maintenance of health information technology (HIT) systems and programs.

IRIS Announces FHIR® Enablement of VSAC Resources
IRIS Develops FHIR® Terminology Service for the Value Set Authority Center
Alexandria, VA, December 21, 2017– IRIS Health Solutions, LLC is proud to announce the initial implementation of a Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR®) Terminology Service for VSAC resources. The service was delivered through IRIS’ support of the Federal Health Architecture (FHA), and FHA’s partnership with the National Library of Medicine ‘s (NLM) Value Set Authority Center (VSAC). This RESTful API provides users holding a free Unified Medical Language System® Metathesaurus License access to the current VSAC value sets and supported code systems.
The VSAC provides downloadable access to all official versions of vocabulary value sets drawn from standard vocabularies contained in the CMS electronic Clinical Quality Measures (eCQMs) (https://vsac.nlm.nih.gov/). This service supports theCodeSystem and ValueSetFHIR Terminology Module resources to access value sets published, and code systems hosted, by VSAC.
“HL7’s FHIR® is intended to enable health information exchange in a wide variety of settings. Creating a service that would FHIR® “enable” the VSAC seemed like a crucial step in advancing the HIT’s communities shared interest in achieving information interoperability; we are grateful for the opportunity.” David Clark, IRIS’ President.
Since 2015, NLM has provided a prototype of the service to be leveraged for terminology tracks at several HL7 FHIR Connect-A-Thons. IRIS was asked to support its development and make enhancements to the service in October 2016. The team hopes to continue its work with FHA and NLM to expand this capability to additional FHIR resources.
This is the second FHIR® related announcement from IRIS this year. On September 28, 2017 IRIS launched FHIRView™ a free online service which offers a simple, direct rendering of FHIR®’s resources, elements, and datatypes. FHIRView™ ® was developed in response to the need for an intuitive, fast, and accurate method to access health IT standards and compare data models.
IRIS is a health information technology (HIT) management and technology services firm founded in 2006 which leverages decades of HIT program management, architecture, engineering and software development experience. IRIS Releases FHIRView™, for Easier Access to Health IT Standards
“Often, we develop tools during the course of our consulting engagements that save our customers money because they allow more work to be accomplished with less human capital,” says David Clark, IRIS’ President. IRIS developed FHIRView™ in response to the need for an intuitive, fast, and accurate method to access health IT standards and compare data models.
Through IRIS’ health IT consulting research and development projects in the federal health space, IRIS’ health IT architects and analysts discovered that extensive time and resources were being spent by clinicians attempting to manually navigate FHIR data while modifying legacy healthcare data systems to support the emerging FHIR standards. IRIS’s FHIRView™ organizes the navigation of the standard in an intuitive mind map with hyperlinks to the queried data, saving hours of consulting time. “The tool can be rapidly customized for other models in order to harmonize data between them, reducing program costs.” Says Dr. Alberto Llanes, IRIS Chief Architect and FHIRView™ technical lead.
IRIS’ goal is to continue to develop ‘short-cut’ tools that can be leveraged by skilled practitioners to hasten the reality of true bi-directional health information exchange for organizations.
The intuitive FHIRView™ tool is available for public use at http://www.irishealthsolutions.com/FHIRView.
IRIS can rapidly customize the FHIMView™ and the FHIRView™ tool to an organization’s specific interoperability needs. For more information about IRIS Health Solutions please visit http://www.irishealthsolutions.com.
